Public get bum deal from bog standard loo facilities

Emdad Rahman

It’s time to once again raise a relevant and very pertinent point of discussion- something that has annoyed me for a good number of years.

This is most certainly not an optical illusion and for the record I would like to clarify that I have not spent the last seven days trying to escape through the main sewage pipe in Shawshank prison. The ghastly pictures you see on this page are real, not from Thomas Hewitt’s abattoir den in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre –For the record, Leatherface has not converted to Islam and had a reminiscing slasher flashback moment on the bog either, but they are from a true blue bonafide Tower Hamlets Masjid.

When I stepped inside this one I felt like a surviving soon to be crazed fiend from 28 days later. I shuddered, held my breath against the nerve gas, half expecting a rabid zombie with a bloodcurdling scream to shoot out from the pan and lunge for my throat, waiting for the inevitable moment when I would be joining the grotesque hordes in Danny Boyle’s gore flick.

The first thing I noticed was the obvious hygiene, dirt, grime, and permanent brown stains that would require an industrial strength Pumice Scouring Bar to even tickle, ;et alone remove.
If it’s a service station, school, office, and in this case a Masjid you’re guaranteed to find a yellow stained dripping backside seat. After being party to some horror scenes one would be forgiven for assuming that the intoxicated club revellers union had held a covert meeting at the premises the night before. With not a mop in sight for a DIY cleansing job, worshippers will find themselves reading book of the month in a smelly yellow puddle before wiping their footwear with their pocket Kleenex. I have also observed those of a nervous disposition, exiting the loo whilst biting their fingernails, obviously forgetting to wash hands first. Others may open wide the door, peer poignantly at the john, sigh loud and deep before flushing and making their way to the ablution area. I blame this forgetfulness on the trauma placed on the personal self by a dirty, germ ridden and unclean toilet, which reminds me of a notice I once saw in an East London Masjid - “Toilet out of order, pleased use floor below.”
Everyone on our great green universe has to have used a public toilet during some point of their existence. What haunts and is a source for nightmares for me is trying to work out why some people feel it is heir mission in life to urinate over the seat, and then leave the said seat unwiped as a semi permanent momento – A little “I WOZ ERE” etch. Don’t laugh – the hands that clean these toilets also prepare your lunch, so next time be seated and aim properly.

You need to have no forensic experience to conclude that it’s always the men folk that indulge in these artistic and creative practises, and I know of more than one person who will go to great lengths to discreetly use the female WC to simply retain their hygiene sanity.

Snuggling tissued seat covers or wet wipes are convenient and enterprising ideas, though not the best option. How many readers have actually been able to securely land or upend their derriere on a tissue proof toilet seat .
“Cleanliness is half of faith...” reports the Hadith reported by Abu Malik at-Ash'ari. Purification is an absolute privilege and the attention to hygiene in Islam is unmatched. Whilst some may say it is a desirable attribute, Islam insists on it, making it an indispensable fundamental of faith.

Cleanliness is an essential part of Islamic life and in fact the meaning and spirit behind the concept of cleanliness is much beyond the superficial concept of the conventional cleanliness.

I implore the respected Masjid Committees to invest a very small chunk of the huge TV appeal revenue you earn during Ramadhan and invest in long overdue facilities. What use is youer beautiful tgranquil carpetr if half the worshippers are entering the prayer area in an unclean state. Surely the committee must accept some responsibility and admit to gross negligience.

The committees and Masjid bigwigs owe it to your worshippers and the general public to provide visitors with clean premises, toilets and sanitation. After all, worshippers attend the Masjid to cleanse their mind, body and spirit. Your bumbling mismanagement and lack of attention to detail is frankly offensive.

Volunteers are fine, but this is the modern day, and Masjids must start employing full time /part time cleaning personnel on a rota basis. Only then might we expect a proper jug instead of an Evian bottle, maybe even some tissue paper and wait for it… soap.

Just one last thing - When visiting the Masjid loo Patrons are requested to remain seated throughout the performance.

Black cats deflated – Liverpool 3-0 Sunderland

Beach boys came to fortress Anfield
Shades, candy, sticks of rock on show
Mesmeric strike with three on the clock
Fernando Torres quid pro quo

Glenda’s deflection off Turner
Stevie G choreographed the flair
Johnson to Torres to deftly pierce
The wind from Brucie’s bag of hot air

Reds breached visitor walls at will
Though guilty of a lacking killer touch
Oozing class, poise and assurance
When the Red Army sets free the clutch

Marauding Gerrard the red hot fulcrum
But almost a late Cats consolation
An old Red returning home
Welcome back Boudewijn Zenden

Pensioner stabbed to death

Emdad Rahman

The Police have launched a murder investigation following the death of a 69-year old Bangladeshi woman in Tower Hamlets.

Police were called shortly before ten pm on Wednesday to reports of a woman possibly assaulted at an address in Lister House, Vallance Road, E1.

Officers and London Ambulance Service (LAS) attended and the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

The identity of the woman is known, but the Police are awaiting formal identification by next of kin.

A post-mortem examination was also held at Poplar Mortuary yesterday. The Homicide and Serious Crime Command are investigating, and a man, aged in his 40s, was arrested at the scene. He is currently in custody at an east London police station under suspicion of murder.

Speaking exclusively to London Bangla, Ahmed, a resident of Lister house said; “We all knew the woman, and everybody is of a strong opinion that the old lady’s killer was her own unruly son.”

UK's first Bangladeshi female Ref

Emdad Rahman

17 year old Tahmina Begum from Tower Hamlets has broadened boundaries and conquered stereotypes to become the first Bangladeshi female referee in the UK.

Tahmina joined a group of 12 that passed the referee course. She said, “I wanted to do the course to become a qualified referee but had some reservations because I knew all the participants would be male and older than me.

"But I wanted to break down barriers and hope others willfollow in my footsteps."

Project Director, Kamrul Islam said, “Our work is to improve grass roots football and the referee course is one way of doing this. We have the first Bangladeshi female referee and she will be a role model for others to follow."

Tahmina, a dedicated sports freak is already a trained basketball coach and also possesses a Community Sports Leaders Award (CSLA). The PE Assistant from a Tower Hamlets Primary school is also one of the deputy Young Mayors of the Borough.

The Science Museum host's its latest exhibition, 1001 Inventions: Discover the Muslim Heritage in Our World, which traces the forgotten story of a thousand years of science from the Muslim world, from the 7th century onwards. The free exhibition, which runs from the 21 January to 25 April 2010, will look at the social, scientific and technical achievements that are credited to the Muslim world, whilst celebrating the shared scientific heritage of other cultures. The exhibition is a British based project, produced in association with the Jameel Foundation.

Featuring a diverse range of exhibits, interactive displays and dramatisation, the exhibition shows how many modern inventions, spanning fields such as engineering, medicine and design, can trace their roots back to Muslim civilisation.

History in the making

Zakir Khan’s selection confirms history will be made - Emdad Rahman

Tower Hamlets Conservatives left it late to confirm Zakir Khan as the Prospective Parliamentary candidate for Bethnal Green & Bow.

The final installation of the much anticipated jigsaw now ensures that history will be made when the UK will see the first ever Bangladeshi MP within the hallowed halls of Parliament.

Khan, who is Head of Community Affairs for the Canary Wharf Group Khan was elected at a packed meeting, beating off the challenge of five fellow Conservative party candidates.

The win was greeted with much mirth, cheering and clapping from supporters.

“It is an honour to be elected to serve the people, he said, adding “a huge privilege to be selected as the Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for Bethnal Green and Bow.

“My thorough grassroots experience gives me an edge, and I have a genuinely thorough and true understanding of the aspirations and needs of my community.

“I am confident that I can use my experience as a driving force to win Bethnal Green and Bow from Respect.”

“Zakir is a respected community activist,” said Respect leader and fellow candidate Abjol Miah. “I am confident though that Respect has the correct mix of sincerity, hard graft and genuine community engagement to take even larger strides this time round.”

Ajmal Masroor, the LibDem PPC for Bethnal Green and Bow said; “I welcome Zakir to politics. He is new to the tough world of campaigning and meeting voters. As a fellow candidate, I wish him all the best.

Readers were asked about their election aspirations. Sultana from Weavers Ward has confidence in Rushanara Ali; “She’s intelligent, cool and is a great Ambassador for the British and Bangladeshi communities,” she said.

“Rushanara Ali gets my vote all the way.”

University student Afia Begum from Bethnal Green is backing Abjol Miah. “I take nothing for granted in life and the situation could change”, she said.

“I’m excited that we will see the first Bangladeshi Brit in Westminster - I hope Mr Miah wins, he has worked so hard for the community.”

“Ajmal Masroor has a proven track record of leading young people and anti racism campaigns,” said Mostaque Choudhury.

“He provides charismatic leadership to empowering our communities and has the best attributes to awaken the aspirations of our youth.

“By far he is the best candidate,” he added.

“I will vote Abjol Miah, said John, a Bow resident. He is more popular here than many people give him credit for. He’s a sincere man, who will go a long way.”

“Zak Khan is popular across all spheres,” said Shilpi. “His election is a superb move by the Tories and I think he is quietly confident of his prospects.”

Jeremy Hunt MP, the Shadow Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport was present as a guest and congratulated Zakir on his candidature, wishing him every success.

Tower Hamlets Tories are expected to put forward a real challenge in the general elections with Councillor Tim Archer tipped for a strong campaign in Poplar and Limehouse. Approximately a third of Councillor Archer’s constituency is made up of Bangladeshi Muslims.

UK Councillor targeted for “Western” dress

Emdad Rahman - East India and Lansbury councillor Shiria Khatun has spoken to the Police after being subjected to malicious phone calls and threats. The calls, mainly of a sexually explicit nature have led to the councillor now starting to wear loose-fitting and traditional Asian attire.

The vile calls have now begun to target Councillor Khatun’s family, including her husband and three children.

The Labour Councillor has been a target for over a year by callers mostly speaking in broken English and the local Sylheti dialect. Khatun felt “too embarrassed” to initially report matters took decisive action when her family were targeted.

One macabre instance is when a caller threatened to dig her parents out of their graves and bury her in their place.

“As an elected councillor I am supposed to be strong, but now this has gone too far,” she said.

The councillor said that the depraved callers had made lewd references to her “Western clothes, my tight jeans and my body parts.”

“I first thought that this was the work of a pervert, but gradually things became scarier and worse. I lost my parents as a young age, and I’m suspicious that the callers knew this.”

“Everything digital, be it online or on the telephone can be traced,” said Abid from Whitechapel. The Police have absolutely no reason to not catch these people.

“This is horrendous. A Councillor who works tirelessly for our community is threatened. I’m afraid this is beyond a joke, and I fully expect the authorities to catch, prosecute and heavily punish these people as an example.”

A diligent advisor to ex Mayor Ken Livingstone, Councillor Khatun is one of the most popular Councillors in the borough.

The Police are investigating the matter.

Youth group to visit China for charity

Emdad Rahman - A group of youth & community volunteers from North and South UK are heading to China on a mission to raise money for two worthy projects. The seven member team are going to embark on a strenuous trek of around 50km of the Great Wall of China in April 2010.

Under the umbrella of Ummah Welfare Trust (UWT) the team have been working tirelessly to raise their target of £7000.00. UWT has a 100% donation policy. This means every penny you donate will go straight to the charities where it is needed the most and nothing is deducted to cover the administration cost.

The funds raised will pay for the development of at least one horticultural garden in Mauritania (Africa), which will be cultivated by 200 women. This will allow the residents to diversify their meals. It will give them access to food items considered very rare, almost non-existent in the desert area. The income from the sale of the crops will be used for the members’ household needs and also for the general community according to who is in need the most.

This income generation project will indirectly benefit 10,000 people.
The second project will involve the building of at least one water well in a remote area.
Water is one of the prime essentials in life. Yet millions of people around the world have no access to water and the crisis continues.
The direct beneficiaries of this project will be around 30 households.

The leader of the team Eman Ali from Manchester commented “this is a very noble cause and I am glad to be part of something which is immensely rewarding, I would like to request everyone to donate as much and as little as they can and also spread the word on our behalf”.

Rofikul Islam a recipient of London Borough of Tower Hamlets Mayors award for community service is also one of the team members. He said; “these projects cannot turn into a reality unless we have support from our communities, I am amazed by the responses we’ve had so far. Our Just Giving web page has been inundated with positive support from the young and old. This clearly emphasises the need for such projects.”

If you are interested to find out more about the project, please visit the teams website on http://www.justgiving.com/uwtchinatrek or alternatively call the Ummah Welfare Trust office on 0800 4 0800 11.

Ezy Traders Ltd, a car accessory firm based in Bradford is the sole corporate sponsor for the trek.
Bangladesh observes 'Amar Ekushey' and International Mother Language Day on 21st February. Sylhet Mayor Badaruddin Kamran presents a floral wreath at the central Shaheed Minar, Sylhet. Also paying tribute were UK Awami League Afsar Khan Sadek and Commissioner Saleh Ahmed Salim.
