John Biggs AM calls on Mayor to reverse police cuts in face of rising crime

Local London Assembly member John Biggs today called on the Mayor to reverse his police cuts as it was revealed that East London has lost 132 officers in the last two years.

In March 2010 there were 2,083 based in East London. By December last year the number had fallen to 1,951. Across London the Mayor has cut 1,700 police officers in the last two years.

The most recent Metropolitan Police crime figures, released two weeks ago, revealed that robbery rose by 36.4 per cent in Tower Hamlets in the last year and Robbery rose by 21.2 per cent in Barking & Dagenham in the last year.

Local Labour Assembly member John Biggs said: “These figures reveal the full extent of Boris Johnson’s police cuts. Rather than embracing the government’s cuts to the police we need a Mayor who will make sure we have enough police on our streets.”

“The loss of officers is completely unacceptable. As Robbery, Burglary & Theft are rising in East London we need more police on our streets, not less. That’s why I’m calling on the Mayor to protect the police to help keep our streets safe for all of us.”

While overall crime in London is down 1 per cent in the last year, certain types of violent crime including burglary, robbery and muggings have risen significantly:

Liverpool v Manchester United: FA Cup preview

Stage set for Liverpool v Manchester United clash

Emdad Rahman: The backslapping and adulation has barely subsided and Liverpool find themselves gearing up for another blockbuster at Anfield.

After the pulsating Carling Cup semi-final defeat of Roberto Mancini’s Manchester City, Steven Gerrard has led the battle cry and called on his team mates to regain their focus before the tie of the round.

With much being written and said about Patrice Evra, managing director Ian Ayre does not want to diminish the passion of the head to head but is adamant that the focus must purely be football centred.

"It is the FA Cup, a great competition in English football and one we have a great history in and we want that to be what everyone focuses on," he told BBC Radio Merseyside.

"We have massive rivalry with Manchester United but those who are respectful also have respect for them because they are a great footballing side and team and like us they have been very successful.

"We mustn't detract from fans chanting and singing at each other but it needs to be a rivalry thing rather than a hatred thing.

"It is about a great spirit and a match between two great teams and it is certainly not hatred - there is no place for hatred in football."

Most of the focus will be around the appearance of Evra who is set to appear at a highly charged Anfield. Emotions remain high after the last encounter in October, when Evra accused Luis Suarez of racism. The Liverpool striker was found guilty and given an eight match ban. El Pistolero will not be featuring in the game.

Sir Alex Ferguson has already suggested that the French full back will be in the first team, whilst ex-Red Devil Viv Anderson is convinced Evra has the strength of character to deal with the ferocity and passion that the tie will bring.

United have several injury concerns joining Nemanja Vidic on the treatment table. Phil Jones and Nani were subbed during the clash with Arsenal. Portugese star Nani may be out of up to two months with ligament damage.

Rio Ferdinand has struggled to regain full fitness and with such a casualty list it is unlikely that stand in captain Evra will be excluded from the squad.

"It wouldn't be a consideration,'' United assistant manager Mike Phelan told MEN. "Patrice Evra is a football player, who plays for Manchester United. If he is fit, he is considered to play like any other player.''

Liverpool may have reached their first Wembley final since the white suit brigade took over the twin towers in 1996, but Dalglish is keen to avoid a successive FA Cup knockout to their arch rivals.

Speaking on talkSPORT former Liverpool Defender Dominic Matteo said that the League Cup and a good FA Cup run would represent a satisfactory season.

I believe fans expectancies are reasonable, but higher than that of Matteo’s. The Champions League spot remains a priority for both fans and the board. Most would settle for that and a trophy this season. After all this is a major rebuilding job for Dalglish.

With huge scrutiny likely to be focussed on chanting and bantering fans it is vital that any trouble makers, mischief makers and law breakers amongst both sets of fans have swift and immediate action taken against them.

Whilst the spotlight is on Evra it is important the focus is on the game and it is anticipated that this could be another classic.

Let the battle commence.

Downing Street meeting for Holocaust survivor and Student Ambassadors

Rt Hon David Cameron MP, the Prime Minister, and Rt Hon Nick Clegg MP, the Deputy Prime Minister, joined Holocaust survivor Ben Helfgott MBE and Student Ambassadors who have taken part in the Holocaust Educational Trust’s Lessons from Auschwitz Project in signing the Trust’s Holocaust Memorial Day Book of Commitment at 10 Downing Street.

Ben Helfgott MBE is a remarkable man, who having survived Nazi camps including Theresienstadt and Buchenwald went on to captain the British Olympic Weighlifting Team in 1956 and 1960. Georgia Evans, Lucy Johnstone and Sam Tuck from Jack Hunt School in Peterborough visited Auschwitz-Birkenau and have since led campaigns in their community to fight prejudice and bigotry.

Signing the Holocaust Memorial Day Book of Commitment the Prime Minister wrote: “With each year that passes since the end of the Holocaust, we have a greater responsibility than ever to remember the dreadful events that took place.  By learning from history, we must pledge that nothing like this ever happens again. I commend you for the excellent work that you do, educating new generations about the suffering of the past and ensuring that we never forget one of the darkest periods of our history.”

The Deputy Prime Minister wrote: “This year we must ‘speak up, speak out’ as we remember the Holocaust: with each passing year, the need to remind the world of the darkest chapter in our common history becomes all the more acute – because to forget is to risk a repeat of history.  And that must never ever be allowed to happen.”

The Leader of the Opposition, Rt Hon Ed Miliband MP, also signed the Book of Commitment, writing: “Speak up, speak out is an essential message for us all as we remember the Holocaust. It reminds us that we must never forget the terrible genocide perpetrated against the Jews. We owe it to all those who perished to remember and speak up against antisemitism – we must speak out against injustice and bigotry wherever we find it.”

Over 200 MPs have already signed the Book of Commitment and EDM 2566, a cross-party motion marking Holocaust Memorial Day 2012.

To mark Holocaust Memorial Day, Lord Janner of Braunstone QC, Chairman of the Holocaust Educational Trust, commented:

“Holocaust Memorial Day is the key time to remember the millions who were murdered by the Nazis during the Holocaust and all those subjected to appalling persecution, as well as the victims of later genocides. It is vital that we fight prejudice and racism in all its forms and today is a timely reminder to speak up and to speak out, wherever and whenever we encounter it.”

Team London Volunteers Deliver Football Tournament

A group of young people volunteering at the Bangladesh Football Association organised a 5-a-side football tournament during the festive period.

The 6 young people have been volunteering at BFA since October 2011 and wanted to do something for other young people in their community. The young people attended an Event Management course to learn the basics around how to organise and deliver an event. This event was funded by a grant from Team London, the Mayor of London’s programme to get more Londoners volunteering across the capital.

The young people used their Event Management learning to organise a 5-a-side football tournament for their peers in the following age groups: U10’s, U12’s, U14’s and U16’s. The tournament took place at Mile End Stadium on Thursday 22nd December 2011. A total of 173 young people and 30 teams participated in the tournament.

In the U10’s age group, Acorn FC A were victorious with Vallance Tigers coming runners up. In the U12’s age, Soul FC were victorious with Soul Youth coming runners up. In the U14’s, Bow Juniors A were victorious with Soul Youth B the runners up. And in the U16’s, Soul FC were victorious with Soul Juniors the runners up.

Project Manager, Kamrul Islam said: “This tournament would not have happened if it was not for the hard work and enthusiasm of the volunteers who took the initiative to organise and deliver it. They planned and recruited the teams and worked hard on the day. So well done to them and everyone should thank them for giving time to make a difference in their community.”

The Bangladeshi Football Association’s Team London volunteering programme is supported by the Mayor of London and the Reuben Foundation.

Brits’ Summer Holiday Plans During the Olympics

2.5 million planning to take time off to go to events

With only 6 months to go until London 2012, ABTA - The Travel Association reveals approximately 2.5 million people are expected to take time off work to attend events in or around the Games in London and other Olympic venues around the UK.

According to research commissioned by ABTA, a further five million are expected to take time off to watch the Games on TV in the comfort of their own homes. Overall 40% of the British public are expected to take time off whether at home or abroad during the Games, which run from 27 July to 12 August, one of the busiest times of the year for travel.

The excitement factor

Excitement or apathy about the Games is split fairly equally, with 31% saying that although they will not take time off during the Olympics they are excited about them, while a further 30% say they plan to ignore them. Research shows the generations are split when it comes to feeling excited about the Games.

The most fervent Olympics fans are the youngest with 38% of 15-24 year olds saying they are excited about the Games, compared to 28% of over 55s.

Escaping the crowds

Clearly we are not all sports lovers, 12% of Brits say they are intending to go abroad specifically to avoid the Games and 9% are looking to go on holiday somewhere in the UK free from Olympics fever. The older generation appears to be the least keen on staying in the UK; with 22% of the over 65s intending to head overseas to avoid the Games and 18% of 55-64 year olds.

Londoners most likely to change plans

Perhaps unsurprisingly, over a quarter (28%) of Londoners are considering changing their holiday plans due to the Olympics. Nearly 50% say they will take time off throughout the games and 77% say they will be staying in the Capital during the two weeks.

Victoria Bacon, Head of Communications, ABTA said: “With only six months to go until one of the biggest sporting events in our country’s history, it’s clear that hundreds of thousands, especially the young, will be taking time off to enjoy London 2012. However, for those who don’t love sports or want to escape the crowds, going abroad will provide a welcome alternative.”

Anfield expects Reds to deliver

Liverpool v Manchester City: Carling Cup semi-final preview

By Emdad Rahman
Original article - Many egos in the Kop dressing room will be bruised and battered after Kenny Dalglish ripped into his lightweights after an abject and downtrodden performance at the Reebok Stadium at the weekend.

Dalglish said his players were distracted by the semi-final encounter against Manchester City and now have to prove that the three goal drubbing was a one off.

Liverpool go into this semi second leg with one league win in six and nine for the season so far. The Reds saving grace has been the equally inconsistent form of their league rivals, which leaves them six points off Chelsea.

The Reds have been different in the cups though and are 90 minutes away from their first trip to the new Wembley and their first final since the 2007 Champions League Final in Athens.

Liverpool will again look to Steven Gerrard for the winning spark. Gerrard is the ultimate big game player and City’s coaching staff will not need to be reminded about this.

Craig Bellamy, who has arguably been the best player so far this season, may not be up to playing a second consecutive game so soon.

The City threat will emanate from the boots of David Silva, who will look to take centre stage in the absence of immense Lucas. The Sky Blues do have an Achilles heel which has been further pinpointed by Spurs, and it is none other than Stefan Savic.

The Montenegrin is the weakest link and he is the league leader's fragile piece at the back. Savic also felled Daniel Agger for the first leg penalty that led to Gerrard’s clincher.

Roberto Mancini’s men will be on a high after achieving what could be their most significant win of the whole season. The last minute 3-2 home win over Harry Redknapp’s Tottenham will have had everyone sit up and take note.

It was a mammoth win and cements them as champions elect. Another £50 million on new players during this window should do the job.

The big question at Eastlands will be whether Mancini, David Platt and Brian Kidd will be looking to field a second string side for the semi clash at Anfield. Critics will argue City’s second string are better than most other teams in the country but against a side like Liverpool they will do so at their peril.

It may be a low priority game for the Sky Blues but for the fans and the home grown players a cup final at Wembley is not to be sniffed at. It’s a big week for Liverpool with Manchester United in the FA Cup this weekend and the Reds will not look the gift horse n the mouth.

In a week that saw certain playing staff face the wrath of Dalglish and with the visit of John Henry and Tom Werner it is crucial that results this week reflect the level of expectancy from the board and fans. It’s time to deliver or some players will be heading for the exit.

I’m looking ahead to Wembley and already hatching plans for final tickets. It’ll be a big night at Anfield.

British Bangladeshi Power 100 launched in Westminster

Emdad Rahman:

During a press conference at Portcullis House, Westminster, Abdal Ullah, Ayesha Qureshi MBE and Nobab Uddin launched the first ever British Bangladeshi Power 100 list.

The list is a compendium of individuals, who through ideas, innovation, intervention and participation, are influencing the British Bangladeshi community in Britain today.

Speaking about the list Ayesha Qureshi MBE said: “This is a resource which is concise and will become a point of reference for everybody in the years to come.

“We wanted to recognise not only the achievements of the British Bangladeshi community but the extent and the breadth British Bangladeshis are reaching out to.”

Chief Advisor Nobab Uddin added: “This has been learning experience for me, to see so many names making such dazzling contributions.”

Abdal Ullah, the power List founder cited the example of Noorjahan Begum, a teacher at Mulberry school for girls: “This is what inspiration is about. Here we have a unique and fantastic woman educating the next generation of Rushanara Ali’s.

Amongst the speakers was Anne Main MP (Member of Parliament for St Albans) and chair of the Britain – Bangladesh All Parliamentary Group. She said: “We are very interested on how the Bangladeshi community is represented in the UK. This was not easy; it could have been a 1000 list.

“This list has integrity as a list genuinely chosen on merit and I applaud the fact that everyone included here is through value alone.”

She added jokingly – “There is one person on the list who made it from twenty quid and I’ve asked him for his secret.

“The time is right and the fortieth celebration of Bangladesh has proven to be the ideal moment to launch this publication.

“Uncle” Frank Dobson MP whose daughter in law is a Bangladeshi biology teacher said: “I remember taking part in marches and rallies forty years ago. The Bangladeshi community was worried about employment and housing. It was on its knees and petrified of what was happening back home. Forty years on and this very same community has blossomed beautifully.

“The first change Bangladeshis have made is to British society. You have transformed British culture with your language, religion, culture, and transformed our eating for the better. Last weekend I attended a school awards ceremony and felt very inferior. There will be young people from amongst those recipients and many others around the country who will go on to make huge contributions not only to the Bangladeshi community but even more so to the wider British community.”

Rushanara Ali, the MP for Bethnal Green & Bow said: “This is not an easy list to compile, like Anne said the list could easily accommodate 1000.

“There's so much going on in the community and I'm thrilled to support this effort. Having had a sneak preview it's clear that there is diversity within the list; men, women, recognition for the arts, journalism, the military. In years to come this country will be amazed by the talent and promise in our community. I wish the team every success and I hope that this list generates a discussion and helps to redefine our image in this country. The overall perception of us and our contribution is changing but we are not there yet. There’s a long way to go and these initiatives will help tremendously.”

Abdal Ullah thanked his team and the Bangla media for their support.

The British Bangladeshi Power 100 has been created and edited by Abdal Ullah and Ayesha Qureshi MBE. The rankings have been determined by an advisory committee of leading Bangladeshi UK based newspaper editors headed by chief advisor, Mohammed Nobab Uddin, Editor, Janomot Bengali Newsweekly, the oldest ethnic newspaper.

The list has also been consulted on widely amongst a selected group of leading figures in the community. Each person or organisation named on the list has earned their place on merit after a confidential, impartial and thorough debate.

It was confirmed that the power list will be an annual publication. Notables on the list include amongst others; Rushanara Ali MP, Dr Muhammad Abdul Bari, writer Monica Ali, Muay Thai boxing champ Ruqsana Ali, newscaster Tasmin Lucia Khan, human rights activist Irene Khan and Tower Hamlets executive Mayor Lutfur Rahman.

Community bids farewell to Shahidul Hassan

Emdad Rahman: The community said a final farewell to St Paul's Way Trust School pupil Shahidul Hassan who drowned after accidentally falling into the local Canal last week. Those around him tried very hard to rescue him however they were unable to do so.

Grahame Price the head teacher of St Paul's Way trust School visited the bereaved family and passed on the heartfelt condolences of everyone within the school community.

In a letter to parents he wrote: "Shahidul was a dedicated , hardworking and respectful young man. He was very popular with all of his peers and all of the staff at St Paul's Way Trust School.

" Our thoughts and our prayers are with his family at this most difficult of times."

Mr Price hired four coaches to escort pupils and well wishers to offer prayers and their respects to Shahidul at the East London Mosque.

Imaani Begum, a parent olat the school added: "Shahidul's death is a tragic loss for us all. His demise has bought the whole community together as one. We are all praying that his family find peace in their hearts.

"We are all touched by Mr Price's gesture. He hired coaches for students to visit the Mosque and partake in prayers and pay their last respects to Shahidul. This is an example of how our communities can leave aside our differences and become united as one."

After the Janazah prayers for the deceased at the East London Mosque Shahidul was finally laid to rest at the Gardens of Peace Cemetary in Hainault, Essex.

Plans announced for Olympic Hockey test event

Some of the world’s best hockey teams have been announced to play in the Visa International Invitational Hockey Tournament, a test event for London 2012 and part of the London Prepares series.

The event, which will take place at the brand new Riverbank Arena on the Olympic Park from 2–6 May, will feature the men’s Australian and German teams, currently ranked number one and two in the world. The current women’s world champions Argentina, as well as both the men’s and women’s British teams, will also be in action.

The tournament will also feature a men’s team from India, and women’s teams from China and Korea, and will give all eight teams the chance to compete in a tournament for the first time in the Olympic Park. The Riverbank Arena, a temporary venue, will be fully completed and will host up to 60,000 spectators over the eight sessions of the tournament.

The Visa International Invitational Hockey Tournament will be used by the London 2012 Organising Committee (LOCOG) to test key operations ahead of the Games including the field of play, video referral, timing, scoring and results systems. The event will also be tested alongside six other Olympic test events taking place in the Park at the same time,

David Luckes, Head of Sport Competition at LOCOG said: 'The Riverbank Arena is one of the most striking venues in the Olympic Park and it is vital that we run an event which will test our field of play, the venue and our workforce before the Games.

'We are delighted to have been able to secure such a strong line-up of team’s for the Visa International Invitational Hockey Tournament and offer the spectators the chance to see world class hockey in the Olympic Park just a few months before the Games.'

Tickets will be on sale for the Visa International Invitational Hockey Tournament in early spring.

Construction starts on gigantic new sculpture in the Olympic Park

The ‘RUN’ installation has been created by internationally-renowned artist Monica Bonvicini.

The artwork is made up of three nine-metre-tall letters forming the word RUN in capital letters, each weighing ten tonnes.

It will be largest standalone sculpture on the Park and will be located outside the Copper Box. The letters are made from steel and reflective glass to create a mirror effect during the day. LED lighting inside the sculpture will reflect off a series of internal curved mirrors to illuminate the artwork during the dark.

It will take around six weeks to fit all the components to the letters, including the glass and 305m of energy efficient LED lighting.

Dennis Hone, ODA Chief Executive, said: ‘The RUN sculpture will not only become an attraction for the Olympic Park during the Games, but also for years to come as a focal point for the many thousands of visitors who will come when the Park is transformed after the Games.’

John Keohane MVO BEM, Chief Yeoman Warder at the Tower of London, is retiring at the end of this month after more than two decades service at Her Majesty’s Royal Palace and Fortress.

The Chief Yeoman Warder is the most senior member of the Sovereign's Bodyguard based at the Tower of London known as the Body of Yeoman Warders, and commonly called ‘Beefeaters’.

John joined the Body in 1991, shortly after leaving the Royal Corps of Signals; he began as a Yeoman Warder and was promoted to the position of Chief Yeoman Warder in 2004. He is the longest serving Chief Yeoman Warder since 1947 and the second longest serving in history.

Having enlisted in the army in 1964, John saw service in Singapore, Oman, the Falkland Islands, Belgium, Holland and Northern Ireland. He worked up through the ranks to Warrant Officer Class II and was awarded a host of decorations including the British Empire Medal in 1985 and the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in 1984. John currently lives at the Tower with his wife Ruth, and they have two children, Paula and Andrew and six grandchildren, Charlotte, Rebecca, Jonathon Nathan, Elizabeth and James.

John reminded readers that the Tower of London is in fact a village within Tower Hamlets. “Everyone who lives within these confines pays Council Tax to Tower Hamlets Council,” he said.

During his twenty years John has met some very interesting people. The Royal Family though are his favourites. He said: “All the various family that we get to meet are special. I have personally known HRH the Princess Royal for many years. During my Military days she was my Colonel in Chief.

“I was also fortunate enough to give a personal tour to Mrs Michelle Obama, her mother and two girls.

“She said she would bring back Mr Obama, but were still waiting. It’s not as if he’s that busy,” he added with a wink.

Upon John’s retirement, Yeoman Gaoler Alan Kingshott (the Chief’s deputy) will be promoted to the position of Chief Yeoman Warder. Alan joined the Body of Yeoman Warders at the Tower of London in March 1998, following a distinguished 25-year career in the Royal Hussars.

Enlisting as a Boy Soldier in 1968, he progressed through the ranks to become a Warrant Officer, instructing his squadron in tank gunnery. His military life took him to Canada, Hong Kong, Cyprus, Germany and Oman.

Nowadays, Alan lives with his wife Patricia in the heart of the Tower of London, is a keen gardener, and enjoys the occasional round of golf with colleagues.

John’s deputy and successor has been at the Tower of London for 14 years. John has no doubts that Alan will effortlessly slot into his big boots: “This is a challenging year with the Queen’s Golden Jubilee, the Olympics, the Olympic Torch coming to the Tower and the Thames Flotilla. He’ll be absolutely fine.”

John’s busy day officially starts at 8am on the dot every day. He has 37 Yeoman Warders, of which 21 are required during the morning headcount to ensure that all posts are manned before the gates are opened to the public.

The afternoon is spent completing admin tasks and fulfilling engagement and ceremonial roles. At 3pm John presides over the Ceremony of the Word – a display to show the public that there is a Military Garrison presence within the Tower of London.

The Chief Yeoman Warder's daily role within the Tower is to manage the Body of Yeoman Warders, ensuring they are trained and equipped to the highest standards required by Historic Royal Palaces, the independent charity responsible for the Tower of London; to oversee the duties and responsibilities of the Yeoman Gaoler and the five Yeoman Serjeants; and to liaise directly with the Resident Governor on all matters affecting the traditions and heritage of the Body of Yeoman Warders.

The Body consists of a total of 37 Yeoman Warders who all come from a Military background, have completed a minimum of 22 years in the Armed Forces, having achieved the minimum rank of Warrant Officer, be aged between 40 and 50 years of age on taking up the appointment and be in possession of the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal.

The ceremonial role of the Chief Yeoman Warder - known up until Victorian times as the Gentleman Porter - involves overseeing the Ceremony of the Keys, the nightly closing down ceremony of the Tower.

Every night, with an escort of four soldiers, the outer gates of the Tower are locked and secured for the night, witnessed by up to 80 members of the public who can apply for tickets to watch the event.

“The ceremony takes place at 10pm on each and every night of the year and has been taking place with the walls of this great fortress for over 700
years,” said John.

The Historic Royal Palaces is a Charity. “We don’t receive a penny from the Government and every penny earned is ploughed straight back in,” John say’s.

He added: “The Tower of London is managed by Historic Royal Palaces, the independent charity also responsible for Hampton Court Palace, the Banqueting House, Kensington Palace and Kew Palace. Historic Royal Palaces help everyone explore the story of how monarchs and people have shaped society, in some of the greatest palaces ever built.

“We receive no funding from the Government or the Crown, and depend on the support of our visitors, members, donors, volunteers and sponsors. These palaces are owned by The Queen on behalf of the nation, and we manage them for the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport.

“We believe in four principles. Guardianship: giving these palaces a future as long and valuable as their past. Discovery: encouraging people to make links with their own lives and today’s world. Showmanship: doing everything with panache. Independence: having our own point of view and finding new ways to do our work.”

John’s retirement will allow him to spend more time on his hobbies including hill walking, computers, Heritage Steam Railways. Once a year, John becomes Sir Topham Hat, the Fat Controller for Thomas the Tank Engine themed trips on the South Devon Railway.  He also drives the Routemaster Bus (RM 1872) that is owned by the Railway and provides a Heritage Bus Service around Buckfastleigh.

He is an institution within an institution and will be sorely missed.

Registered charity number 1068852

PS: If you visit the Tower be wary of the muckface who mans the pass office outside the Tower gates. Rude, obnoxious and definitely needs retraining on how to greet visitors from all over the world.

Braving the Cold for Gaza’s Children

There is a story taking place- thousands of miles away- which you will not see on the news. Gone are the images of war-torn Palestine and the people of Gaza under siege. Gone are the constant headlines and the non-stop reporting.

All that is left are the everyday people of Gaza trying to meet their everyday needs in extraordinary circumstances.   Since 2009, the medical infrastructure of Gaza has been severely damaged- with sick and injured children suffering the worst. That is why we are focusing on the urgently-needed medical facilities for Gaza’s children with completing the construction of Al Durrah Hospital.

Muslim Hands is set to hold its 4th Annual Winter Walk on Saturday 28th January 2012 in London’s Hyde Park.  The aim is to help raise further funds to support Al-Durrah - the main hospital for children in Gaza.  The 5-mile sponsored Winter Walk this year will be joined by celebrities including Colin Nell, world famous freestyle footballer.

Last year, brave walkers raised a phenomenal £60,000k to pay for an urgently needed Emergency Wing & Pharmacy Department for Al-Durrah Hospital.  In one year alone, the hospital supported approximately 130,000 sick children.  Without your support, this would not have been possible.  Basic necessities such as a waiting room for patients, a separate place to store drugs with proper ventilation and room temperature; a medical disposables store and an external pharmacy room have allowed the hospital to improve work efficiency.

This year the participants hope to raise a further £30,000k to complete the facility with three new departments; Gastroenterology, Cardiology and Respiratory Section.

To support this cause and make a donation please visit the website or ring 0115 911 7222.

Your donation will help to provide safe conditions for sick children in terms of hygiene, proper ventilation and psychological comfort insha’Allah.

Sophia Bukhari, one of the previous Winter Walkers shared her reasons for taking part in the Walk.

‘I took part in the Winter Walk last year to raise awareness on the injustices facing Gaza and to highlight the problems the country is facing so more people could understand what was going on there.  I would definitely encourage those willing to take part in the Winter Walk this year as it’s an amazing experience where you will get to learn a lot about yourself and raise awareness of the problems in Gaza to the rest of the world.  It was a fun, eye opening and unique experience!’

British Bangladeshi Power 100 - 2012

Most of the forefathers of our Bangladeshi community were immigrants who arrived in UK from the 1950’s onwards. They came then and also after the liberation of Bangladesh, bringing with them large groups of their family, settling with their parents and spouses in the UK.

Ethnically the majority of British Asians come from specific locations in their home countries. For example over 90% of the people of Bangladeshi descent living in the UK come from the Sylhet district of Bangladesh. There are 153,893 Bangladeshis in London, which make up just over two per cent of the population and 55 per cent of all Bangladeshis in England and Wales.

In the present day the descendants of Bangladeshi immigrants are third and fourth generation British Bangladeshi people living in Great Britain. Most have fully integrated into mainstream society; in employment many have made a useful contribution to workplace diversity.

The British Bangladeshi Power 100 has been created and edited by Abdal Ullah and Ayesha Qureshi MBE. The British Bangladeshi Power 100 list represents 100 people whose ideas, example, talent, success or discoveries influence or positively highlight the British Bangladeshi community and/or improve the world we live in.

The list is divided into ten categories covering:

1.    Business Brand/Entrepreneur
2.    The Catering Industry
3.    Education Culture and Sports
4.    Community and Voluntary organisations
5.    Media
6.    Politics and Policy
7.    The Professions
8.    Religious and Community figures
9.    Women
10.  Emerging Influence.

Each category has 10 positions which are listed in rank order.

Abdal Ullah – Founder said:

“As we celebrate 40 years of Bangladeshi independence, it is time to recognise and celebrate the success of the Bangladeshi community in the UK. I strongly believe we have amongst us individuals and organisations with real influence that are making a difference to how the community is viewed by the wider public. This will be an annual publication and I will be seeking to build on its success year by year. My plan is that each person named on the list will have earned their place on merit and after we have had a confidential, impartial and thorough debate to ensure the list is respected and valued as a resource by the community.”

Nobab Uddin – Chief Advisor said:

“There is a small representation of British Bangladeshis in business and also local government politics, including nationally within the major political parties. But I must say that the Bangladeshi community is growing rapidly in the UK, and both third and fourth generation British Bangladeshis are contributing significantly in various sectors and professions.

As the community continues to grow this BBL100 list is long overdue and time to praise our achievement and share this with our own community living in the UK and around world and the wider British public. There are many hidden talents in our community who we hope to unearth for the 2013 BBPower 100.”

The 2012 list will be launched on the 24th January at a press conference hosted in Portcullis House, Westminster, London and will be published widely in the UK and Bangladesh Press.
