Euro 2008 – Day 3 - Group of slow lingering death

Absent Patrick and Thierry, with the old guard were missing
The dour Zurich stalemate left many reminiscing

Congratulations to loyal Coupet, at last a major
Nothing more deserved for the canny old stager

Whilst warhorse Thuram’s fifteenth broke another record
Abdul Salam’s bleak streak just couldn’t be ignored

Les Bleus future is assured with starlets Toulalan and Nasri
For Golden boy Benzema a mention and the ferocious Ribery

Later on in the battle of Berne it was a totally different kettle
As Total football and Catenaccio pounded the mettle

Even green fingered Charlie Dimmock took a break from her sprout
Donned number 18, changed her name to Dirk Kuyt

Rickety old boys Italy with the oldest starting eleven
Could Oranje youthful exuberance ever be forgiven?

For each of the flying Dutchmen were in killer mode
Energy compressed and ready to explode

Thunderous they detonated like live dynamite
Herculian Wesley gave the Azurri a mighty fright

Though Osso Donadoni and his champions will be lurching
It can still be put right with deep blue soul searching

Number 7
