Inquest into death of Luton Bangladeshi man

Emdad Rahman

Bedfordshire Coroner, David Morris, has opened an inquest into the death of 27 year old Mohammed Abdus Samad, of Leagrave Road, Luton who was found hanged at the back of the Anando Mahal Restaurant.

The post mortem confirmed the cause of death as hanging and the inquest was adjourned for a date to be arranged later.

The identification of Mohammed Abdus Samad took place at the Jalalabad Jame Masjid Mosque, 36 -38 Leagrave Road, Luton.

Bedfordshire Police attended the scene and Scenes of Crime Officers together with the force photographer, detectives and other officers also attended to ensure all evidence including CCTV was secured quickly. House to house enquiries have been undertaken and statements have been secured from those people who were in the area at the time and who have contacted the police. Officers are continuing to speak to people within the community who may have concerns and they also continue to meet with community representatives regularly to update them.

Superintendent Jim Lunn, Head of Operations at Luton Police Station said: “Bedfordshire Police’s sympathy is with this man’s family. This is a tragic case where a young man has died. We always take sudden deaths extremely seriously and we have investigated this case thoroughly and continue to do so on behalf of Her Majesty’s Coroner.

He continued: “Bedfordshire Police has kept an open mind throughout this investigation and Her Majesty’s Coroner has undertaken a post mortem today (Tuesday, June 1) which has revealed no suspicious circumstances surrounding this death. The police will continue to work with the Coroner to gather further evidence for the inquest.”

Bedfordshire Coroner, Mr David Morris, will now prepare an inquest hearing which will take place at a future date after all enquiries have been undertaken in connection with the death and the circumstances surrounding it. The inquest will be held in a court of law and is open to the public.

Superintendent Lunn continued: “Until the Coroner has instructed otherwise Bedfordshire Police will continue this investigation on his behalf and we are continuing to appeal to anyone who has information about what happened in Leagrave Road on Thursday afternoon to come forward or anyone who knew the deceased to also to come forward.”

There were fears within the community that Abdus Samad had been the victim of an alleged 'honour killing.'

Many Bury Park residents called an emergency meeting with officers last Sunday to discuss the investigation.

Prior to post mortem Councillor Tahir Khan said; “There are different clues emerging that this wasn’t suicide.

“He was found with a scarf around his neck and attached to railings.

“Apparently death threats had been made towards his life.”

Detective Sergeant Barry Townson assured the community that the investigation was ongoing. “We are talking to anybody that comes to us with information, and we are acting on any information received.”

Community Leader Abul Hussain said; “We want the community to stay as calm as possible.

“The Police have assured us that they will do everything possible and make necessary enquiries. If this is murder then the matter will be fully investigated.”

Mr Samad’s family have been supported by officers from Luton Police Station, who together with a Bengali Doctor, who witnessed the post mortem on behalf of the family, have broken this news to them.

David Morris, will now prepare an inquest hearing which will take place at a future date after all enquiries have been done in connection with the death and the circumstances surrounding it.

The inquest is held in a court of law and is open to the public. At the inquest the Coroner will have all the evidence available to him in order that he can determine the conclusion of this investigation.

Until the Coroner has instructed otherwise Bedfordshire Police will continue this investigation on behalf of the Coroner and is continuing to appeal to anyone who has information about what happened in Leagrave Road on that fateful afternoon to come forward or anyone who knew the deceased to also to come forward and help investigators piece together the facts of exactly what happened to this man.
