Tower Hamlets gets UK’s first digital heart checks

How healthy is your heart? People in Tower Hamlets can now test the health of their heart in digital kiosks – the first in the UK.

Anyone living in Tower Hamlets aged 40 to 74 can visit a digital kiosk and take a heart health assessment. This will tell them how healthy their heart is now and how likely they are to develop heart disease in the future.

Judith St John, Head of Idea Stores at Tower Hamlets Council said: “The council is delighted that Tower Hamlets was chosen to pioneer this health initiative, and the Idea stores are perfect locations because they are easy to access for everyone in the borough.”

All the kiosks are linked up to local GP surgeries so you can opt to have a follow-up with your doctor if you have any concerns, or you can track your own progress on your journey to better health.

The kiosks are currently located at Idea Store Bow and Idea Store Chrisp Street and will be available until 24 July.

There will also be heart health kiosks at a variety of community venues and events throughout June and July. Health Care Assistants will use mobile heart pods to measure patient’s cholesterol levels, blood pressure and BMI and offer advice on how to prevent problems in the future.

Dr Ian Basnett, Director of Public Health, NHS Tower Hamlets said: “Heart disease is preventable, yet it kills 42,000 people every year in the UK. There are many factors that can contribute to heart disease. We want to help those at risk in Tower Hamlets – people aged forty-plus – to understand what can cause an unhealthy heart so they are able reduce and to deal with any potential risks."
