EMDAD RAHMAN: Seven year old Ehsaan Haque, a victim of a hit and run van driver has died at Southampton General Hospital after a two week battle for life. Ehsaan, who had been transferred from Great Ormond Street Hospital last week, was dragged 60 yards along a road after being hit by an onrushing blue van on July 28. It is reported that the driver of the blue van fled the scene after getting out of the vehicle and seeing the badly injured youngster.
The family of Ehsaan live in Portsmouth, and they had been visiting their relatives in London for a two week holiday. The accident occurred in Newbury Parks Leyswood Drive, a road that is fast becoming a dangerous cut through and convenient exit for drivers wishing to avoid the busy A12.
”People cut in off the A12,” said a neighbour, adding “devoid of speed humps, this road is becoming more and more dangerous. Our thoughts are with Ehsaan and his lovely family. They are very popular around here and everybody is feeling their loss.”
Officers investigating the horrendous crime have appealed to the public to help them trace the driver. The suspect is described as white with blond spiky hair, was driving a blue Toyota Hiace Powervan and escaped on to the A12.
Detective Inspector Simon Sharp said: "We urgently appeal to the driver of the van to come forward, and ask anyone who recognises either the man in the e-fit or the van to contact us.
"Anyone with information, no matter how small or insignificant you feel it may be, should call us as soon as possible."
Ehsaan’s cousin Jahangir has requested readers to remember Ehsaan in their prayers, especially those who are observing Ramadan.
Anyone who has information should call the Police desk on 0208 597 4874 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
