Seven times elected Councillor John Biggs, the current London assembly Member for Tower Hamlets and two other Boroughs is making one final call for Labour members to vote him in as their Mayoral candidate.
Biggs was leader of the Labour Group from 1991-1995, and defeated the Liberal administration in a landslide victory in 1994. He is a graduate in science, who worked as a lab technician, retrained as an IT specialist and worked in the City and then studied to be a lawyer. He lives at Stepney Green with his wife, who used to be a local head teacher, and his daughter, who is studying at university.
“I want to be a Mayor who reaches across our communities and serves them all,” he said.
“And I have found that my support comes from all communities, which is as it should be – a Mayor needs to represent the whole Borough.
Biggs spoke exclusively to London Bangla on the eve of the Labour party members vote in Tower Hamlets.
“I want through your paper to thank my many Bengali supporters for their help and advice. The secret ballot allows everyone to do the right thing without pressure. And of course I send best wishes during this holy month.
“My message is simple: I am the candidate with the record of achievement, the track record of success unmatched by the others. If I am Mayor I will work to build a better, more outward looking approach to politics in Tower Hamlets. With a Lib-Con Government forcing cuts on us, we need a strong voice. I can, with my experience within and beyond the borough, provide that voice.
“Leading Tower Hamlets is a massive job. Let’s choose a candidate who has the experience to do it well.
“I have the hunger to take up the fight for our community. We must use all of our energy to fight the LibDems and the Tories not ourselves. And we have an almighty fight ahead of us.”
Councillor Motin uz-Zaman, the current Mayor of Tower Hamletsis supporting Biggs. ”I am supporting John Biggs for Mayor, because he has the depth of experience and qualities required to be an excellent Mayor for all our residents,” he said.
