Scintilla CC win Barking and Dagenham derby

Emdad Rahman

Scintilla Cricket Club took home the bragging rights as the first team comprehensively defeated neighbours Barking Cricket Club.

Club captain Ahmed Choudhury lost the toss and put in to bat first on what looked like a good bowling track. Scintilla played a controlled pace for the majority of their 45 overs to post a healthy score before using the last ten overs to rack up an impressive 232.

The star of the attack was Bellal who top scored with fifty. The half centurion had double cause for celebration as he was also announced as the Players' Secretary at tea time.

Although Barking trail Scintilla in the Essex County league standings they finished runners up last year and Scintilla players remained vigilant of the threat posed by their experienced starting XI.

The home team took to the field after tea but were unable to match Scintilla's score - losing by 16 runs. Man of the match was Prince who cut through the batting order for 4/18.

There was regular partnerships starting with openers Syed Siam (17) and Ahmed Choudhury (33).  Ashfaqur Rahaman Nobel made a quick fire 25.  Ashique Rahman also played a vital knock whilst providing solid support to Nobel.

Players' Secretary Bellal shared a century stand with Ishaq Shawn. He said: "I'm deeply proud to have been selected as the Players' Secretary of this special club.

"My team mates were immense and their support was the springboard for my personal performance, which was only a small part of the overall team performance."

Robust Scintilla veteran and all rounder Sajal Rahman took two vital wickets including the removal of the in form Pulkit Gupta.

In the absence of Malaysian star Faris Almas Lee, stand in captain Ayaz Karim skippered Scintilla. "The performance was polished and very measured," he said. "I was impressed with the energy shown by the whole team and key to this important victory was that every man fulfilled their responsibilities to a tee."

Club Captain Ahmed Choudhury added: "I always knew anything over 200 was a very good score.  If we had controlled our extras, i.e. wides, the winning margin could have been bigger."

There is room for improvement and Scintilla need to improve catches in the field after four missed opportunities during the Barking innings.
