Neighbours in Poplar aid trip to Calais!

Calais Monday 18th March 2019

Blog notes from Sister Christine Frost:

A group of six of us spent a day at the Calais Refugee Community Kitchen engaged in a variety of jobs including washing over 60 pairs of clogs worn by kitchen volunteers, sorting out camping equipment and washing up hundreds of plates!!!! We had arrived with commercial bags of rice & barrels of oil (see photo of our young volunteers loading the mini bus before our journey), an assortment of clothes, food stuffs, biscuits & sweets & most vitally important a large container of fresh garlic which had been requested by CRK the evening before!

The mini bus smelt of garlic by the time we arrived at the kitchen & it was given a warm welcome!

A group of American youngsters from their London School were enjoying a break from sorting clothes as we arrived. They described their four day visit to the kitchen as an enormous culture shock. Emdad took a photo of the group holding his football shirts.

As usual we were completely over awed by the dedication and bonhomie of the volunteers & the whole efficiency of the exercise. We saw vans leave with cooked meals for Dunkirk. Seven others were being loaded for distribution points in and around Calais.

‘’When you look at the spirit of the Kitchen etc coming together united with people of all faiths, political persuasions, languages serving their fellow humans. A common purpose is so binding enabling amazing feats of  generosity to take place'' - Emdad

Our next date is booked for Wednesday the 24th of April when volunteers from the local DWP office have booked to come along and committed themselves to fill the bus with food etc.
