The homeless, and in particular, rough sleepers are probably the most at risk of contracting the Coronavirus.
Jim is desperate. He knows something serious is afoot but his deteriorating physical health and mental wellbeing don’t allow him to dwell on the dangers. He’s still sleeping rough. He has no idea of how to keep safe.
From a good distance I swotted up on basic health advice for homeless friends and gave him a little pep talk sermon whilst propped up on my bike.
- Contact Streetlink - https://www.streetlink.org.uk or local homeless services for help
- Don’t sleep near others and don’t share bedding or tents with anyone you don’t live with
- Don’t touch mouth, eyes, nose with unclean hands
- Don’t share bottles, cans, pipes, cigarettes etc.
- Cover mouth with tissue when coughing or use your sleeves.
He said he remembered me from the Whitechapel Mission on Christmas Day and sees me on my Santander Cycle a few times a week. That bought a smile to my face.
Jim lost his job, friends, family due to deep depression after his partner left him for someone else. He got a little treat from One Third Soup Kitchen and a book to enjoy today. He’s thanked me by promising to try listening to my advice.
