The Corona Chronicles - connecting communities

In the modern day connecting via technology may be a given to us but there are many people out there to whom access to things like smartphones might be a life or death matter.

And before You all scream it’s a third world problem I’d like you all to hear me out.

One of the senior citizen young ladies in my home borough got in touch for a food pack. It turned out she hadn’t been able to use a smartphone after her own very basic one died a couple of weeks back.

Luckily, I had a spare at home gathering dust and it’s done the job. She can now FaceTime her grandkids, family, friends. She tells me that a massive cloud of anxiety and depression has been lifted immediately.

In fact when this is all over she will visit me at the Foodbank with a massive food drop. She’s even said said she’ll return the phone once she gets a new one so that someone else can benefit.

Thank God for small mercies.

The power of connectivity plays a huge role in our mental and physical well being, especially our elderly.

Today we delivered four food packs - For me the individual numbers going down probably means residents are probably relying less on us, being independent, and engaging with their own personal networks.

Having said that we might have a mad flurry of activity in a weeks time if forecasts are to be believed.

If you’re a local resident then the Hedgecock Community Service Foodbank, Barking & Dagenham is at your service.

If you’re in isolation please make time to talk to your extended family, especially the elderly. You may be saving someone’s sanity and even their lives.
