The Corona Chronicles - Teamwork makes the dream work!

We are afraid too but the burning desire to walk alongside the community overwhelms that fear.

Today the Hedgecock Community Centre Foodbank and East End Covid 19 Support Network delivered 13 food packs in Tower Hamlets, Redbridge, Waltham Forest, Newham and Barking.

At the same time a coalition of volunteer groups agreed to pool resources to support East London communities as the Coronavirus continues to bring hardship and misery to the lives of the most vulnerable residents.

What’s been helpful is old school familiarity and though we can’t vouch for everybody the majority of our volunteers are familiar faces in the community and that makes it a lot easier for us. Either that or the recipient knows someone within the network.

It’s not ideal but in these desperate times the best thing we can do is work alongside someone who we can pull up short and sharp if the need arises or the laws of the jungle have to be applied.

At the launch of the Island project 403 hot meals and 200 food packs were served to vulnerable local residents - many being elderly and home bound.

The collective is made up of the Island Network, in partnership with Docklands Football Club, One Third Soup Kitchen, East End Covid 19 Support Network and the Hedgecock Community Centre Foodbank, Barking.

The initiative has received tremendous local backing from the likes of Zakir Khan, Associate Director at the Canary Wharf Group and Rohul Miah from One Housing.

We are limiting volunteers so only a handful of people will be delivering these delicious, freshly prepared hot meals. Even then the coalition has engaged 35 volunteers with the majority working solo.

I’m always interested in outreach through partnership. We all serve our communities far more effectively when we sacrifice our own branding and come together (safely) for common goals and purposes.
